MACAO was established on September 2003 in Northern Tanzania, in order to raise awareness in the community about HIV/AIDS. MACAO is working in Northern Tanzania to help to educate about HIV/AIDS to people in the Masaai, Sonjo and Hasabe tribes.
Where we work: The largest part of Ngorongoro district is the Ngorongoro National Park. In this National Park there are three tribes which are Masai, Sonjo and Hasabe. This district is divided into three divisions with 33 villages. Currently we have started with one division which is the largest part of all. This division is called Loliondo and is the headquarters of the Ngorongoro District.
What we do: We support people with HIV/AIDS, orphans and widows. And also we educate these tribes who are distressed and suffering with HIV/AIDS. These tribes have traditions and cultures of circumcising the girls by using local methods and they have the culture of inheriting widows. They also have the culture of having more than one wife; One man can have more than three wives, and many men marry women who are much younger. These cultural practices put people at risk for HIV/AIDS. As a result MACAO is educating people about ways to protect themselves and avoid HIV/AIDS. Come and join us in spreading the knowledge about HIV/AIDS, in these communities so that they may be able to avoid behaviors that put them at a high risk of HIV/AIDS transmission.
MACAO is committed to seeing that people with HIV/AIDS, orphans and widows love and live satisfactorily in the society and are entitled to the basic rights of food, security, basic education/vocational training, healthcare, shelter, employment and participation in community development.
Although MACAO is working in Northern Tanzania at the moment, the organization will also one day provide services to people in need in other communities outside the boundaries of Northern Tanzania. This implies to the large and ever growing geographical focus of MACAO’S services.
